Piles (Hemorrhoids) – Overview

Description:

Haemorrhoids or piles are distended veins of the lower rectum or anus, which may present pain, discomfort, itching, and eventual bleeding during the passing of stool. They may be internal (within the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus). The most frequent causes are chronic constipation, difficulty during stool production, pregnancy, obesity and sedentary lifestyle.

Types of Piles

Internal Piles - They are in the rectum; they are usually painless, but can also result in bleeding.

External Piles- develop around the anus under the skin; they may be painful, swollen and irritated.

Thrombosed Piles- These are formed when blood clots are formed within external haemorrhoids, leading to severe pain and swelling.
